Top Down Rug
A word of warning it may be a little bit too strong.
Top down rug. I bought a carpet to put down over top of the tile but my robot vacuum folds up the edges and gets stuck. You may be laying down an area rug because you can t stand the color of the existing wall to wall carpet such as in a rental unit but trust us it will look much worse if you just throw down a rug that clashes with what s underneath. Choose something with a different texture and or fiber like jute sisal silk high low or a flat weave with color and pattern in order for the rug to distinguish itself as a new and important component in the room. Odd shaped areas can be tricky but you can cut down a rug to fit exactly where you need it in no time at all.
Lay out the rug pad on top of the area rug. Use a few heavy books to hold down the edges and let them uncurl. Ever wanted to put a rug somewhere but you just couldn t find the right size. When laying the rug over carpet however the concern is more about the rug wrinkling or rippling which presents a big tripping hazard wrinkling will occur because as one area of the rug is stepped on it will shift assuming it is not properly.
Rugs that slip and slide on hardwood vinyl or tile floors are a known hazard. When laying an area rug over a hard surface such as hardwood flooring the biggest concern about the rug s movement is that it will slide around. I bought this tape to tape the carpet to the tile and this carpet is going nowhere. Use a utility knife to cut to size.
Unroll the area rug face down. The only difference when the rug is going to be used over a carpet is to make sure that the color of the rug complements the color of the carpet. With only a marker a yard stick utility knife and a hot glue gun get the perfect size rug to fit your space in just a few minutes.
