Small knots or loose mats can sometimes be pulled into smaller separate tangles from the root side of the knot nearer to your scalp. Lay down in a bathtub filled with the hottest water you can stand. Untangle the easiest knots with your fingers.

Even if you are faced with the most stubborn of dreadlocks don t be tempted to cut comb or brush the knot.
